| The story is not
only an introduction to Wilmington aviation history, but North
Carolina aviation history as well. The Museum has grown from
modest beginnings as a foundation’s dream of community
preservation and is now spreading its wings into larger, more
visible exhibit space in the new international terminal of the
Wilmington International Airport.
The North Carolina Museum of Aviation is unlike others in
this area. It appeals to all….children as well as adults
as well as seniors, men and women alike. All people have a
fascination with flight having touched their lives in some
way. It appeals to people in a wide range of socioeconomic
levels. It is Patriotic, celebrating our nation’s history.
One has only to look at the diverse group of people that attend
an Air Show.
Currently, the museum’s core mission involves displaying a
rotating schedule of aviation art, history, science, and
cultural exhibitions, dedicated to the history of commercial
and general aviation in the state. Exhibitions will change throughout the year in an
effort to provide an educational and cultural experience for
the nearly 500 thousand passengers who use the Main terminal
and International terminal annually. The staff looks forward
to partnering with the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, NASA
and other noted national aviation museums. Their pledge is
that local citizens will feel a sense of ownership to the
museum and donate their time, resources, and especially aviation
artifacts in these critical beginnings of the museum.
Over the years, many audience surveys revealed that an exhibits
program ranks high in the top five services that an Airport
can offer to passengers. Thanks to overwhelming support from
aviation enthusiasts of the museum, the preservation of our
community heritage will continue.
The North Carolina Museum of Aviation hopes to inspire you
and offer you the opportunity to become involved in a project
that will benefit our community as well as our state. Participate
in this unique experience of shaping our future as we preserve
our past.
