The
Wilmington Aviation Foundation, a non-profit 501(C)3 entity,
was formed to help preserve Southeastern North Carolina’s
rich aviation heritage. And in 2003 the Wilmington Aviation
Foundation was formally named The North Carolina Museum of Aviation
by the state legislature. The Foundation’s purpose is
to gather aviation artifacts, exhibits, aircraft, and other
memorabilia for display in various exhibit cases throughout
Wilmington International Airport’s main terminal.
Our mission is educating visitors on the substantial role that
North Carolina has played in aviation history through a compelling
array of artifacts, exhibits, aircraft, programs and events.
Now, with this new designation, efforts are focused on becoming
a viable player in the state’s cultural resources. The
Wilmington Aviation Foundation has made the commitment to preserve
the past. First class exhibits will show how North Carolinians
have helped transform aviation from a spectator sport to a major
means of commercial transportation. From the training of hundreds
of military aviators to the fledgling starts of commercial aviation;
Wilmington’s airport helped give shape to a rapidly changing
America. The many historic flights that transpired here helped
make aviation a vital part of our world today.
